Has there been an increase in narcissism and is it making people more unhappy?

Madeline Bunting a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jul/26/women-wellbeing-unhappiness" writes /a about an increased level of unhappiness, as recorded by surveys, amongst the British population. She thinks this is most notable in teenage girls - 44% seem to be suffering some form of mental distress according to one survey.br /br /It might be thought that mental distress makes people think less highly of themselves and destroys their self-esteem. However, it seems to have correlated with an increase in narcissism. 80% of those surveyed in a US survey agreed with the statement "I am an important person". It was a lot less (12%) in the 1950s. It seems odd at first glance for narcissism and increased mental distress to correlate but perhaps it is logical. If people have an high opinion of themselves and then fail to meet the exacting perfectionist standards of today's materialistic, image-focussed society then perhaps that distresses them and has a negative effect on their psychological state.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/38622711-1874869446187844095?l=vinospoliticalblog.blogspot.com'//div
