An election day referendum on AV?

The Observer a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/jul/26/referendum-constitutional-reform-labour-elections" reports /a that there could be an election day referendum on whether to move to AV. This would be a gamble for Labour. Given that AV is not a proportionate system, the Lib-Dems might not back it. As such, they could go into the election/referendum campaign calling for a "Yes" vote while both main other parties (the Tories and Lib-Dems) were calling for a "no". If so, then they would be very likely to lose the referendum and this would kill off electoral reform for a generation.br /br /However, of course, if a Yes vote is obtained [which I think would only be possible if the Lib-Dems agreed to back it] then this would create an interesting dilemma for the Tories if they won the general election held on the same day. They would have to decide whether to honour the referendum or not. Failure to do so would seem very undemocratic - and showing a contempt for the view of the electorate.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/38622711-1640034519130155582?l=vinospoliticalblog.blogspot.com'//div
