Was the Roman Empire in its decline really that decadent?

With the title a href="http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2009/07/porn-rome.php" Porn and Rome /a [which is sure to get it a lot of hits via Google !], Gene Expression has an article about morality in ancient Rome.br /br /It is taking issue with the idea - often spread by socially conservative critics of today's more liberal societies - that the Roman Empire fell because of its 'decadence' and its moral corruption. The fact is, as the Roman Empire declined, the influence of Christianity increased. There was thus more of a social stress on sexual morality than there might have been in the earlier Empire. So, the Romans' decline seemed to coincide, not with the period of their greatest decadence, but with a period of moralism!div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/38622711-7268650892636792591?l=vinospoliticalblog.blogspot.com'//div
