Political Betting a href="http://politicalbetting.com/index.php/archives/2009/06/18/is-the-battle-now-down-to-young-vs-beckett/" thinks /a that it is between George Young and Margaret Beckett. I disagree. I think it would be difficult for an ex-minister to become Speaker, especially as a speaker should be seen to be someone who will defend the rights of backbenchers. Both Young and Beckett were ministers, albeit in Young's case more than 12 years ago.br /br /Furthermore, Margaret Beckett faces the difficulty that, if she was elected, she would be the third Labour Speaker in a row. This would look bad in terms of party alternation.br /br /It is obviously difficult to say how MPs will vote in a secret ballot, but it could well be the case that the old Deputy Speaker, Sir Alan Haselhurst, could be in with a chance. Also, people might feel it was time to give a senior Lib-Dem a go. This would be good news for Alan Beith or Ming Campbell.div class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/38622711-4542093681413429306?l=vinospoliticalblog.blogspot.com'//div
