Tony McNulty has admitted that JSA levels are so low that he couldn't live on them. This rather honest statement highlights the fact that, contrary to right-wing myth, the social security system is not that generous and it is very difficult for people to live a decent life on the amount they are entitled to. Governments should consider raising JSA by more than the official inflation level if they are to close the gap between the JSA and the minimum wage - and if they are to stop people suffering a huge fall in income on unemployment.
