The high level of farmer suicides in India

This article focuses on the worrying phenomenon of farmer suicides in India . It seems that the opening of the agricultural sector to more free market policies may be contributing to this. Farmers are getting into debt to buy hybrid seeds and to develop cash-crop farming. The revenue they get, though, is not sufficient to meet the increased costs they face as traditional farming methods are driven out by industrial methods that need more capital and hybrid seeds that have to be bought specially at high prices.

The problem facing farmers in some Indian states shows that economic growth has not fed into the rural sector to anything like the degree it needs to in order to make a dent into poverty. Its failure to do so is costing the lives of some of the indebted small-landowning farmer class.
