Elections in Jerusalem

The Independent reports on the mayoral elections in Jerusalem . It seems that a secularist right-winger and a religious right-winger are facing off against one another.

As secular Israelis tend not to live in Jerusalem but the more religious ones seem to like it there, it seems likely that the religious candidate could win. It is a sign of the weakening power of the secular vote in Israel.

Additionally, the fact that both main candidates are from the right illustrates the weak position of the Israeli left. In the early days of the state, they were the largest bloc in politics. The first prime ministers of the country were secular centre-leftists. However, the Right seems to be gaining in popularity. Labour is much smaller than its predecessor parties were.
