Drinking in Wisconsin

This article argues that the high level of drinking, especially of beer, in Wisconsin may be because 40%+ of the inhabitants of the state are descended from German immigrants.

I am not quite convinced about this. Many people in Wisconsin have lived in the US for generations, German beer-drinking customs may not have much impact on them now. Also, of course, in a rural state a bar may be the easiest and most convenient way to socialise. There may not be coffee shops or restaurants as much as there are in more densely-populated or richer areas. It is difficult to necessarily claim that the beer-drinking habits are a German cultural tradition. After all, a lot of beer is drunk in the UK and Belgium as well!
