Another piece of LNC non-functionality that must (naturally) be blamed on Angela Keaton

The Libertarian National Committee is soliciting self-nominations to serve on the Platform Committee.

Given the way in which the LP has treated individuals--both Radicals and Reformers--who stepped forward for this duty in the past, I'm surprised that there are still sufficient free-market masochists available to accept this dubious honor.

But if you're game, here's the official set of requirements:

The Libertarian National Committee is looking to appoint ten people to serve on the Platform Committee in preparation for the 2010 Libertarian National Convention.

Committee members will be expected to expend an appreciable amount of their time in the months leading up to the Convention; and due to the anticipated amount of work, they will be expected to incur considerable travel costs, at personal expense, for meetings prior to the Convention, in addition to attendance at the Libertarian National Convention in 2010.

So that members of the Libertarian National Committee can determine who might best fill seats on the Platform Committee, each applicant is requested to draft and submit via e-mail three proposed or modified platform planks to platform@lp.org no later than November 16, 2008.

In the world of on-line meetings and conference calls, I hate to explain to the LNC that their expectations are--how shall I explain it--so last century.

Instead of creating a open, participatory forum for platform discussions (I am not whistling BTP here, really), the LNC is outright advertising that only the well-heeled need apply.

This goes back to that truly interesting divide between people who are actually free market advocates of an open society, and those who want to drink out of fine china with their pinkies extended deploring the influence of povertarians.

Damn that Angela Keaton, anyway!
