The strategic dilemma faced by the Obama campaign

This article on PoliticalBetting focuses on what could turn out to be a key political dilemma for Obama. Does his campaign focus on the positive and on a claim that his administration would transcend some of the "culture wars" and divisions of the 1990s and early 2000s? Or does it go negative and aim at McCain? The latter has the danger of alienating some independent voters. But the former, too, has risks. To avoid getting down in the gutter when your opponents are running a negative campaign could also result in your voters being demoralised and so your turnout falling.
