George Monbiot writes about the problems that have been and will be inflicted on Third World producers as a result of the EU's attempts to force them to open up their markets . In the article, he mentions that the conventional neo-liberal argument that free trade is always good and protectionism is always bad is flawed.
He points out that the US developed with tariff rates of around 50% in the 19th century. They were able to build up their infant industries and then become the most economically prosperous nation in the world. More recently, Mauritius has emerged as one of the richer nations within the Third World. It has done this by ignoring free trade dogma and by imposing tariffs of up to 80%.
