The answer is no longer 42



The House of Lords defeated the Government over the issue of 42 days detention without charge . It looks like the government is going to accept this and not persist with trying to force it through.

This is a good move. The surrender of liberty involved in detaining people without charge is a big one. One of the most attractive features of modern liberal democracies is their commitment to individual freedom and civil liberties. To detain people for 6 weeks without a clearly stated reason would be throwing a vitally important right away.
